If necessary, you can review the the IPlan Assignment sheet here. Complete the process shown in the diagram below by following the steps and answering the questions for each step.
a. Take a few minutes to reflect on your strengths and weaknesses as a teacher.
My strengths as a teacher are rooted in my personality. I know that students view me as genuine and caring. This will do much in creating a sound basis on which a productive student/ teacher relationship can be built upon. Other strengths include the level of maturity 52 years on this Earth has afforded me as well as the newly acquired content knowledge in science from URI which has rounded out my lifelong informal acquisition of science knowledge motivated by my personal curiosity of the world around me.
My weaknesses as a teacher are getting more apparent as each day of exposure to the teaching experience goes by. The most pressing need I have is to become more proficient in computer skills. I realize that my level of proficiency can be an encumbrance to efficient communication with my students as well as my colleagues. I must also update my knowledge of the effect of socio-economic pressures that can affect students. As I wish to be emplyed in an urban school setting, I realize that having that sound base of knowledge will help me identify and address specific needs of the students as well as the school as a whole.
b. Describe some of your students' strengths and needs that you have noticed so far.
Strengths include a resiliency to rise above the distractions that they encounter in their personal lives and the school environment and put forth a solid effort in learning and progressing through their educational experience. This includes learning in spite of the limitations that their school system situation is imposing on them. Although an urban setting, my students are generally well behaved and respectful.
The need that my students have is that a majority of the students lack the complete, cohesive, communicating social network of support, which includes teachers, parents, and civic organizations to guide them through the educational experiece. Many must feel somewhat alone and apprehensive about their future. This dearth of positive models to emulate and societal assistance is a hindrance to their development.
They seem to be deficient in the intrinsic motivation that most middleschoolers possess that drives them to attempt their best to succeed in their educational experience.
c. Download and complete this URI Self Evaluation form based on one of the lessons you taught last week. Be sure to write down specific evidence from either your lesson plan or your memory of your enactment for each assessment you give. Use a highlighter to identify areas of your teaching/lesson that were either below standard or that you feel needs improvement.
a. Review your school improvement document(s). (If you forgot them, download a SALT visit.)

What is the need?

measurable/observable
should lead to improvement of teaching, student achievement, and/or improvement of learning environment.

linked to applicable Rhode Island Beginning Teacher Standards and elements, e.g. RIBTS 2.4.
In the space below, describe your professional development goal. In a second paragraph, use the information above to provide a rationale for your goal by explaining the personal need that it will address as well as how addressing this goal benefits your students and your school.
I. Professional Development Goal
I will seek to acquire new, or augment existing technological skills and experience that will enable me to better communicate with my colleagues, students, and parents in regard to my students' learning experience.
These skills will also allow me to be a more developed model for my students as a life-long learner and increase availability of resources and opportunities to help in the instruction of my students. Current discoveries in science and the integration of this new information into my lesson plans will ensure that my students are getting up to date pertinent information.
I will also become more efficient and timely in accessing and disseminating the information that is needed in teaching, assessing, and communicating with students, parents, and colleagues. This will allow me more time to develop lesson plans, mine new science information, and work collaboratively with my colleagues.
Now that you have a PD goal, think about what type of learning opportunities you will participate in to address your needs. Use these links to investigate learning options:
Based on what you have found out, write a 1-2 paragraph narrative outlining at least two ways (PD categories) you will engage in engage in by the end of your first year of teaching. For each activity, explain how you think it will address the need that you have identified.
II. Professional Development Plan
I have uncovered two ways to help me gain knowledge and experience to succeed in meeting my professional development needs in communication with teachers, students, and parents as well as helping me acquire skills accessing, differentiating and disseminating information on the web.
The first is (Session 1-The Basics of Effective Web Searching-part 1 by David Fontaine) This course is the first in a series that trains educators in how to identify and locate appropriate information sources, then how to gain access to the information in these sources, evaluate the quality of "said" information, and lastly, use it effectively. They will also learn how to document online educational resources and guide their students through an investigation of educational materials online. Additionally, they will become empowered with the ability to use the Internet to nurture curiosity and facilitate knowledge in their classrooms.
This class will help me become proficient in using the web to imbed my lesson plans with learning goals my students need to succeed in today's world of information technology.
The second Integrating (Microsoft Office Applications into Teaching & Learning) by Stephen Rocco
This course will help participants be better equipped to maintain an efficient technology driven classroom using Microsoft Office Applications. These skills will help me directly in my becoming efficient in the creation of documents, lessons and teaching tools for my classroom.
